What to do in an emergency

We’ve put together some tips to help you spot and prevent any emergencies early.

Most importantly, it is vital you do not panic, and stay level-headed in an emergency.

  • Open windows and doors.
  • Turn off your gas at the meter (unless it’s in the cellar or basement).
  • Turn all gas appliances off.
  • Do not use light switches, doorbells or any electrical switches.
  • Do not return to your home until you’ve been given the all-clear.
  • Then go outside and call National Gas Emergency at 0800 111 999
  • Don’t go back inside your home until they’ve given the all clear.

If you believe you’ve had a power cut, check to see if your neighbours’ electricity supply is also affected:

If their power is still on, it is likely you’ve got a tripped fuse. If it has tripped, switch off all your appliances and then reset it.

If power is off in your local neighbourhood, call 105 to reach your local network operator. They should be able to tell you if there’s a problem in your area, and when it’ll be fixed.
