Traditional meters simply measure energy usage in homes and businesses. You are then required to send your meter readings to your supplier or they will give you an estimated figure on your bill.
Smart meters on the other hand are a more sophisticated and smarter version. They are installed the same way as regular meters, but they can provide more information on your energy usage to you and your energy supplier, quickly and conveniently for your business.

WHAT DOES ‘SMETS’ STAND FOR?
SMETS refers to Smart Metering Equipment Technical Specification. There are currently two types of SMETS on the market – SMETS1 and SMETS2.
We are starting to roll out SMETS2 smart meters later this year. These are the new generation of smart meters which are cross-compatible with other SMETS2 ready energy suppliers in the future. So if you want to switch suppliers, you will not lose all your smart meter features and have to switch meters to restore them. SMETS2 meters are more technologically advanced as SMETS1 and the same meter even can be remotely set to operate either as a credit meter or in a Pay As You Go.
WHY SHOULD I SWITCH TO A SMART METER?
Smart meters allow you to get on with the day-to-day running of your business. They do all the hard work, giving your energy supplier accurate readings each month so you only pay for the energy you use.
