What is a smart meter?
A smart meter is an electronic device which records the consumption of gas or electricity usage and send the information directly to the energy supplier for monitoring and billing.
There are currently two versions of smart meter: SMETS1 and SMETS2.
SMETS stands for Smart Metering Equipment Technical Specification, and the number refers the version. SMETS2 is the second version of smart meter, which features more sophisticated technology making it easier to switch to other SMETS-ready energy suppliers.
How do smart meters work?
Smart meters replace traditional gas and electricity meters. They are able to automatically send energy usage data to your supplier and provide more thorough reports on how you’re using your energy. You may also be offered a smart meter display, which is a portable screen showing you how much gas and electricity you are using in pounds and pence.
Both parts of the system work together to ensure you receive accurate information about your energy use and it automatically shares these readings with your supplier, making sure your energy bills are always accurate.
Information is sent via a safe and secure national network set up solely for smart meters (the Data Communications Company). Although they use a wireless system, you don’t need Wi-Fi for it to work and it won’t use your Wi-Fi if you do have it.

This includes small businesses with separate business premises.
You currently rent your business space, but don’t have your own gas or electricity meter
Speak with your landlord about getting a smart meter for your building.
There are rules on energy use that mean small businesses with high energy use may not be eligible.
