What the Radio Teleswitch (RTS) Switch-Off Means for Your Business

From 30th June 2025, the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) will be turned off, meaning businesses with Radio Teleswitch Meters will need to upgrade before this happens. 

If you have a Radio Teleswitch Meter, there’s no need to worry, our guide will take you through everything you need to know about the switch-off, and how you can make sure your energy supply remains uninterrupted. 

What is a Radio Teleswitch Service Meter (RTS) and Why Are They Being Switched Off?

A Radio Teleswitch Service Meter (RTS) is a device that uses radio signal to help energy meters switch between peak and off-peak rates. RTS is also sometimes known as Dynamic Teleswitch Service (DTS). 

RTS is used in some older multi-rate meters, for example, those who use electric storage systems, immersion heaters in water tanks and panel heaters.  

This type of meter was first introduced in the 1980s but is now reaching the end of its operational life, meaning the equipment that produces the radio signals cannot be properly maintained anymore.  

There are currently around 900,000 RTS meters still in operation in the UK, but the service is due to be closed for good on 30th June 2025- meaning if you have an RTS meter, you will need to upgrade before this happens. 

How Do I Know if I Have a Radio Teleswitch Meter?

If you’re unsure if your meter is a Radio Teleswitch Meter, there is a way you can check: 

  • You may have a separate switch box near your meter which has a ‘radio teleswitch’ label on it 
  • You can contact your energy supplier and ask them to confirm your meter type 

You are more likely to have a Radio Teleswitch Meter if you: 

  • Heat your water using electricity 
  • Have storage heaters  
  • Do not have gas supply in your area 
  • Get cheaper electricity at different times of day, for example, you have an Economy 7, Economy 10 or Total Heat Total Control tariff 

How Will the Radio Teleswitch Service Switch-Off Affect Me?

If you have a Radio Teleswitch Meter, you will need to upgrade your meter before the deadline. If you do not, your business’s heating and/or water may be affected. Your heating and/or water may be continually left on or off, or your charging up may happen at the wrong time of day.  

Your electricity bills may also be inaccurate, as your energy supplier won’t be able to confirm your usage during peak and off-peak times.

How Can I Upgrade My Radio Teleswitch Meter?

If your business has a Radio Teleswitch Meter, your energy supplier should contact you to let you know that you need an upgrade. If you have not heard from your supplier yet, you can reach out to them to find out if you are eligible for a smart meter installation.
